Ingredient Spotlight: Squalane
Have you heard about Squalane?
SqualEne is a naturally occurring fat (lipid) in our skin.
It mimics our skin’s natural oils, making it a wonderful moisturizer. It’s also a natural antioxidant. A light weight oil, it makes up to 10-12% of our skin’s sebum. Unfortunately after age 30, production slows significantly which contributes to dry skin.
Squalene was first isolated in Shark liver. Shark liver oil contains large quantities of Squalene and is considered the richest source. It is also found in olives, rice bran, palm oil, amaranth oil and sugarcane but can't be used in skincare products in its natural state because it quickly becomes rancid with exposure to oxygen. However it can be hydrogenated, converting it to a stable compound called SqualAne and this is what we use in skincare products. The hydrogenation process makes it more skin friendly and a natural antioxidant. You will often see it on the labels off anti-aging cream, lip gloss, and sunscreen products.

You can even put a few drops in your hair to soften it and help with dryness. Hair has its own oil supply in the scalp's sebaceous glands but often becomes dry like our skin from age, weather or heat. Squalane will leave your hair feeling silky but not greasy.
Squalane is helpful in preventing water loss from the skin by forming a thin layer on the skin as it helps to balance the skin's natural oil production. It is considered to be antioxidant because of its ability to protect our skin from the damage of UV exposure by reducing free radical oxidative damage. Squalane has also been shown to effectively inhibit skin tumor growth. It's one of the best natural moisturizers because it is deeply absorbed into the skin without leaving an oily residue.

Products with Squalane can help boost natural collagen production, ultimately leaving plumper looking skin. While Squalane is great for dry skin, it is non-comedogenic, making it helpful for congested or oily skin types.
You can find Squalane in our Ageless Fruit Serum and both of our body oils. We love Squalane!
